July 15, Pete, Jean, Bruce and I began our day touring about 10 am. We obtained tickets at the Visitor's Center for a bus shuttle to the Eisenhower farm. This included a guided introduction to the farm as well as a guided tour of their home. We were told that the Eisenhowers moved 39 times in theiur lives and chose Gettysburg, Pa. to buy a farm with large acreage despite the fact that the soil was poor and unproductive. Ike, especially liked to study the Civil War. He would be near the battlefield and also the acreage being kept together would prevent other development around the battlefield. Ike used , at that time, current soil conservation techniques and the farm began to be once again very productive. The farm is rented today and that money goes back into the upkeep of the farm.
