Yreka, California

We traveled 322 miles today from Pacifica, California to Yreka, California. it was mountainous travel, but probably the most scenic that we have traveled so far. We saw Jack as we went over the Bay Bridge. He was guiding a barge with his tugboat. We traveled on around San Francisco and around Sacramento then traveled straight north on Interstate 5. We traveled through Corning that is the 'Olive Capital of the world'.  We saw Mt. Shasta that has an elevation of 14,162 feet. it is part of the Cascade Range. We saw Shasta Lake. We saw lots of farming along the way.
Looking to find the reason for such a strange name ....Yreka, here is what i found:
Yreka means "north mountain" or "white mountain" referring to the Mt Shasta.  Another story about how the town was named was told by Mark Twain in his autobiography. There was a bake shop with a canvas sign that had not been put up but had been painted and stretched out to dry in such a way that the word Bakery all but the B showed through and was reversed. A stranger read it wrond end first , Yreka and supposed that that was the name of the camp.. The campers were satisfied and adopted it.
